Rotary International
in Great Britain and Ireland

As Rotary is involved in many ways to promote and create peace, International Peace Day is a very natural cause to support. For Rotarians, peace is a core aim. From taking underprivileged children on great days out, helping improve the appearance of a local neighbourhood to the alleviation of poverty, eradicating disease or helping to resolve conflict, Rotarians are involved at grassroots level to the worldwide stage. This is reinforced by the 2012 Rotary theme of Peace Through Service, unveiled by RI President Sakuji Tanaka. Many Rotarians have already joined Peace One Day’s campaign to institutionalise Peace Day, pledging to help restore peace and help others to keep the peace.

Imperial War Museums

IWM (Imperial War Museums) tells the stories of people who have lived, fought and died in conflicts involving Britain and the Commonwealth from the First World War to the present day. Through the Build the Truce project, IWM explored truce as a method of conflict resolution and considered its practical implications. IWM supported the Global Truce 2012 campaign and celebrated Peace Day 2012 with a three-day public programme at IWM North in Manchester and IWM London, which included film screenings, drama performances and keynote panel discussion. The British Red Cross, Conciliation Resources, International Alert, the International Committee of the Red Cross, MSF, MAG and the University of Manchester’s Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute were among the programme’s contributors.
