About Global Truce 2012

You may already know that Peace One Day led the initiative to establish the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence, unanimously adopted by United Nations member states as 21 September – Peace Day. You may also know that we then proved that the day could work in areas of conflict, most notably in Afghanistan, where Peace Day agreements have led to the vaccination against polio of 4.5 million children in recent years. We are grateful to UNICEF, UNAMA and other UN agencies for making it a great success. On Peace Day 2008 the UN announced a 70% reduction in violent incidents in Afghanistan. These successes and many others led Jeremy to launch the Global Truce 2012 campaign: for Peace Day 21 September 2012, Peace One Day is calling for and working towards a day of ceasefire and non-violence, what we hope will be the largest reduction of violence on one day – a world record; and the largest ever gathering of individuals in the name of peace. That mass participation on Peace Day 2012 will be the leverage needed to inspire governments to follow – it will be the key to the success of a Global Truce.

Global Truce 2012 Coalitions

We are leading the process of building coalitions to support the Global Truce 2012 campaign.  We have started by bringing together a Student Coalition and a ‘Reducing Domestic Violence’ Coalition.  Please see below for more details on these. We are hoping that these global coalitions will inspire you to build your own and get your network involved in the process of creating the largest reduction of violence on one day – 21 September, Peace Day – what we hope will be a world record.  Institutionalising Peace Day and making it self-sustaining is our legacy.

‘Reducing Domestic Violence’ Coalition

Peace One Day has partnered with The Eliminate Domestic Violence Global Foundation (EDV), and on the 21st March, we brought together a coalition dedicated to reducing domestic violence worldwide on Peace Day 21 September 2012. Jeremy Gilley was joined by The Rt. Hon. Baroness Scotland, QC (Founder and Patron of The EDV Global Foundation) and a panel of representatives from organisations dealing with domestic violence around the world, to launch this initiative at a conference in London. We are delighted that Peace One Day Ambassador Jude Law and actress Thandie Newton joined us at the event.

We are asking all organisations and individuals from around the world committed to reducing domestic violence to join this effort for Peace Day 2012. Together we can decrease the level of violence globally, raise awareness and generate a vast array of activity around those issues on the day; the launch on 21st March marked the beginning of this journey.

Measuring the Results
Peace One Day will work together with The Institute for Economics and Peace to provide an independent assessment of the impact of the Global Truce 2012 campaign and the reduction of violence globally on Peace Day 2012.  Qualitative and quantitative data will be gathered via individuals/grassroots organisations (with a focus on young people/schools), online registrants via peaceoneday.org and social media. You can find out more about The Institute for Economics and Peace, as well as their Global Peace Index, here: http://www.visionofhumanity.org/gpi-data/#/2011/conf/
