Lot 4: Gavin Turk - Camouflage Fright Wig Silver and Orange on Taupe

Gavin Turk
Camouflage Fright Wig Silver and Orange on Taupe, 2007
Edition of 40
Length 1000 x 1000mm

Gavin Turk is a British-born international artist. He has pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture now taken for granted, including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of rubbish in art.

Turk’s installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the ‘myth’ of the artist and the ‘authorship’ of a work, Turk’s engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready mades of Marcel Duchamp. In 1991, the Royal College of Art refused Turk a degree on the basis that his final show, Cave, consisted of a whitewashed studio space containing only a blue heritage plaque commemorating his presence ‘Gavin Turk worked here 1989–91’. Instantly gaining notoriety through this installation, Turk was spotted by Charles Saatchi and has since been represented by many major galleries throughout the world. Turk has recently been commissioned to make several public sculptures including Nail, a 12-metre sculpture at One New Change, next to St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Lot 6: Nancy Fouts - Peacemaker (look but don't touch)

Nancy Fouts
Peacemaker (look but don't touch), 2014
Metal, wood and painted thorns
Length 35, height, 12, width 6 cm

American-born artist Nancy Fouts has lived and worked in London for the past 40 years. Fouts’ creations send the mind of her viewer on a journey of curiosity and intrigue. Her commitment to the absurd flips one’s expectation on its head. She frees the mind from the claustrophobia of the familiar, and from the confined world of normality.

Fouts follows in the surrealist tradition of marrying unrelated items to turn the everyday into the uncanny. A self-proclaimed object hoarder, ‘ideas come to me by looking at objects afresh’, explains Fouts. ‘I only ask myself 'what else could it be?’ ‘What else does it look like?’ If there is a theme in my work, I would describe it as ‘freedom of thought’.

Fouts re-contextualises and de-values keys symbols of our time; simultaneously elevating the forgotten or overlooked.  Fouts re-wires the mind to look and re-look, to learn and unlearn. A true art prankster at play, Fouts antagonises historical memory, religious mysticism and authenticity. Nancy Fouts is a true outsider, a wandering ‘magpie-like gatherer’ who mines history’s remains. By subverting symbols and icons, Fouts fabricates a beautifully unrecognizable language, which confuses and stuns our logic of interpretation.

Nancy Fouts has exhibited in both galleries and museums worldwide while examples of the artist's works are to be found in private homes and established collections across the globe, including that of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Estimate - 7,500 EUROS

The Connor Brothers
A load of fuss about fuck all ( red ), 2014
Acrylic on canvas
183 x 124 cm

Using collage to subvert the meaning of old master paintings and vintage romance novels, The Connor Brothers cast a cynical and penetrating eye at contemporary culture. Their work reinterprets objects from the past and in doing so provides a humorous commentary on contemporary societies obsession with wealth, fame and the unrealistic idealism of advertising’s vision of relationships. Works by The Connor Brothers can be found in collections Worldwide including The Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

Estimate - 9,500 EUROS
