The greatest violence humanity faces
is domestic violence.

Peace Day is as much about the violence in our homes, communities and schools as it is about civil and international wars. If individuals come together on the day, more violence would be averted than if all wars stopped at once.

With lead partner, the Eliminate Domestic Violence Global Foundation and its founder Baroness Scotland QC, Peace One Day has brought together a coalition of partners dedicated to reducing domestic violence worldwide on Peace Day.

According to the United Nations' Secretary General's campaign, UNiTE to End Violence against Women, on average, at least one in three women is beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused by an intimate partner in the course of her lifetime. Among women aged between 15 and 44, acts of violence cause more instances of death and disability than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war combined (World Bank). Half of all women who die from homicide are killed by a current or former partner (WHO/ World Bank). ‘Domestic Violence occurs across the globe, affecting millions of people across society, irrespective of economic status. No country or community is untouched’ Baroness Scotland QC. There is a strong likelihood that someone you know has been the victim of domestic violence in their lifetime.

Domestic violence affects entire families and communities. In the UK alone, between 750,000 and 950,000 children witness domestic violence each year, affecting their development, educational attainment and health (UNICEF and the Bodyshop International report).

Peace Day will be an opportunity to unite on a scale never seen before and bring the issues of domestic violence to the fore. Together we can decrease the level of violence, raise awareness and generate a vast array of activity around those issues.

Following the incredible success of the Global Truce 2012 campaign, Peace One Day has launched a new theme for 2013: Who Will You Make Peace With?

Peace starts with individual action, and your actions inspire others to do the same. Peace Day 21 September 2013 is a Saturday; it really is an opportunity for all of us to become engaged in the peace process with our families, friends and communities.

By working together and making peace with each other we can improve the quality of our lives. Peace Day is not just about a reduction of violence in areas of conflict, it's also about reducing violence in our homes, communities and schools.

So who will you make peace with? Who will you bring together on Peace Day 21st of September 2013?

Launch Event – 21 March 2012

Peace One Day and The Eliminate Domestic Violence Global Foundation (EDV) were honoured to welcome a panel of representatives from organisations dealing with domestic violence from around the world to the launch event of the ‘Reducing Domestic Violence’ Coalition on 21 March in London, UK.
